Internal Reviews

Graduate Medical Education, Inc. (GMEI) has been asked by our institutional partners, Ingham Regional, Sparrow, and MSU Colleges of Human and Osteopathic Medicine to coordinate internal reviews of the Lansing community's graduate medical education training programs. Both the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) require the review of graduate medical education training programs at the midpoint of the accreditation cycle.

Internal reviews are conducted to assist all programs in meeting accreditation standards. The reviews should assess each program in the following areas:

  • Compliance with the common, specialty/subspecialty-specific program, and institutional requirements;
  • Educational objectives and effectiveness in meeting those objectives;
  • Adequacy of educational and financial resources to support the program;
  • Effectiveness in addressing areas of non-compliance and concerns in previous accreditation letters of notification and previous internal reviews;
  • Effectiveness of educational outcomes in the general competencies;
  • Effectiveness in using evaluation tools and outcome measures to assess a intern/resident/fellow’s level of competence in each of the general competencies; and,
  • Annual program improvement efforts in the following areas and a process for linking educational outcomes with program improvements:
    1. intern/resident/fellow performance using aggregated resident data;
    2. faculty development;
    3. graduate performance including performance of program graduates on the certification examination; and,
    4. program quality. (see Common Program Requirements, V.C.)

GMEI has prepared the Internal Review Preparation Checklist to guide programs as they prepare for their internal review. Please do not hesitate to contact GMEI with any questions or to determine when your program is up for review.
